**In the Department of Youth Justice, you will have the opportunity to work together with people, partners and across places to enable young Queenslanders, especially the most vulnerable, to have positive life choices and opportunities.
As Unit Manager, you will:
- Manage the centre's security operations, ensuring the safety of staff, young people, contractors, and visitors.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to enhance the cultural capability of the youth detention centre and embed culturally appropriate decision-making processes.
- Provide cultural leadership and mentoring to staff, aiming for improved outcomes for young people in the youth justice system.
- Liaise with stakeholders and teams to oversee daily operations, focusing on improving staff cultural competence.
- Contribute to the development and monitoring of young persons' Single Case plans and their integration with security operations.
- Coordinate infrastructure systems, including maintenance, service issues, and security, fire, and communications systems.
- Integrate learning from contingency testing and training, ensuring ethical and culturally responsive decision-making.
- Monitor and manage service provision to young people, promoting safe living and working environments.
- Collaborate with functional managers to oversee financial and human resource management, including rostering, mentoring, performance management, and program outcomes.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the Department's strategic direction, Code of Conduct, and operational plans.
- Lead, supervise, and manage staff to foster teamwork, professionalism, and the achievement of youth detention goals.
- Promote best practice standards in youth detention and support the needs of young people in a secure environment.
- Oversee and manage conflict resolution processes for young people and staff, including grievances and equity issues.

- Communicates with influence - You negotiate in a planned and considered way incorporating desired outcomes and stakeholder views and you communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Role specific - You communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people and understand the issues, philosophies and trends that affect the delivery of services, including issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Every staff member is expected to role model leadership behaviours. This role requires the leadership capabilities of a team leader as outlined in the Leadership competencies for Queensland booklet.
