The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for providing strategic clinical leadership advice to Safer Care Victoria (SCV), the Minister for Health, the Department of Health, and the broader health service and hospitals sector.

The CMO is a key member of the SCV Senior Leadership Team and will work together with colleagues, as one team, to deliver the strategy of the organisation. It is not about your team and its deliverables. It is about a singular goal and mission, improving outcomes for the population of Victoria.

The CMO is the principal advisor on all matters relating to the medical and surgical workforce, and for the provision of professional leadership and direction on a diverse range of issues for Victoria.

The CMO oversees the development of policies and initiatives to support the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality person-centred care on behalf of SCV. Engagement with senior stakeholders and leaders across government and the broader health sector will be required. The role provides a link between SCV, the Department and the broader medical community.

**Purpose**:
The CMO provides leadership for medical professionals across Victoria. The role represents Victoria at a national level and is a key advocate of the medical workforce to the Department of Health.

The role works in partnership with other leaders and teams in SCV to deliver the organisations strategic goals. This is reflected in the following activities undertaken by the role when required (but not limited to):

- Leading medical workforce initiatives for SCV and the Department of Health;
- Contributing to the multidisciplinary approach to workforce solutions;
- Supporting the SCV Safety branch to undertake reviews and make recommendations;
- Executive sponsorship of system wide quality improvement initiatives;
- Engaging with academic institutions within the SCV academic strategy and supporting research relating to SCV work programs; and
- Engaging the medical community to support SCV work programs.
