**About the role
As Legal Officer, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of an allocated caseload of prosecution matters.
Reporting to the Team Leader, you will work on a diverse range of workers' compensation prosecutions, providing legal advice and managing litigation within a supportive team environment.
Key responsibilities
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Assess briefs of evidence in relation to fraud and other offences conducted under the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 and prepare legal advice as required for the Director, Executive Director and Deputy Director General.
- Provide legal advice and prepare briefs, complaints and summons, statements, briefing notes, instructions to counsel and general legal correspondence.
- Manage litigation in relation to fraud and other offences under the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003.
- Attend in person or by telephone call-overs and mentions, appear at sentencing hearings and instruct Counsel at trial, including traveling to various Magistrates Courts in Queensland where required.
- Draft sentencing documents including submissions on penalty.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of legal policies and procedures for the unit.
- Work independently and as part of a small team to ensure that the work of the unit is managed efficiently and effectively.
- Manage your caseload of referrals effectively by balancing competing priorities but always having regard to statutory limitation periods and court directions.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships and strategic networks with internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain the necessary knowledge and skills by participating in professional development opportunities.
- Model professional and ethical behaviour and act in accordance with the Queensland Public Service legislative framework and Code of Conduct.
About the team
The Workers' Compensation Investigations and Prosecution Services (WCIPS) team, within Workers' Compensation Regulatory Services (WCRS), is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of offences under the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003. Our specialist Investigators comprehensively investigate reports of suspected offending and non-compliance with the Act. Specialist Legal Officers provide strategic advice to the Deputy Director General and manage the prosecution of these offences before the Court.
