**Who we are**
Biosecurity Operations Division (BOD) delivers nationally integrated biosecurity and imported food regulatory activities to ensure goods, conveyances and travellers meet Australia's import requirements. Division operations include policy and regulatory control setting across imported food and biosecurity risk pathways, as well as the delivery of assessment, inspection, community engagement and contact centre services. The division also partners with industry to improve the delivery of regulatory functions. The division spans a range of regulatory activities that plays a critical role in reducing risk and shaping our nation to become one of the few countries in the world to remain free from the world’s most severe pests and diseases.

The
**Pathway Policy - Cargo and Conveyances Branch** within BOD is responsible for policy development, reform initiatives and the management of biosecurity risks across air, sea cargo, conveyance, seasonal pests and assessment.

The
**Pathway Policy - Travellers Mail and Imported Food Branch** within BOD is responsible for policy development, reform initiatives and the management of biosecurity risks across several pathways.

The
**Industry Partnerships and Engagement Section** within the Pathway Policy - Cargo and Conveyances Branch is leading the development of innovative biosecurity arrangements aimed at reducing intervention and costs for importers with tightly controlled supply chains. It is also responsible for developing strategies and tools to improve industry engagement across the division, and secretariat support for cargo consultative forums.

**The Jobs**
The role of an Assistant Director is to provide leadership to support the achievement of regulatory outcomes in line with the department’s business plan and BOD strategic direction. The successful applicants will need to influence change, while contributing to business planning and decision-making processes. They will also be required to demonstrate innovative leadership, while providing support to and leading managers and teams in a regulatory environment.

As an Assistant Director - Policy your duties may include, but are not limited to:

- managing the development and review of guidelines, work instructions, policy documents, industry/staff notices and a range of other material
- managing and developing policy that aligns with the agency’s strategic objectives
- contributing to legislative change through the development of explanatory material and consequential implementation activities
- building regulatory capability and promoting regulatory uplift within the department
- undertaking strategic planning to meet business objectives and deliver departmental outcomes
- contributing to and developing business area improvement initiatives and projects
- leading, developing and supervising geographically dispersed teams, ensuring they maintain or develop necessary policy expertise
- effectively communicating, liaising, negotiating with and responding to internal and external stakeholders and participating in committees and forums
- maintaining a well-developed understanding of relevant policy and regulatory frameworks
- preparing and reviewing draft reports, decision briefs, Ministerial correspondence and analytical reports for senior staff, senior executives and Ministers
- supporting change management activities including staff and client participation, consultation and cultural change
- developing and managing complex projects/priorities, including leading communication, monitoring, evaluating and status reporting
- facilitating the escalation of project risks/issues and contributing to quality resolution outcomes
- promoting the APS Values and the department’s Core 4 values and behaviours
- fostering a culture of safety, diversity, inclusiveness, positive attendance and high performance.
