The Finance and Practice Management section reports directly to the General Counsel and is the operational backbone of the division. It has responsibilities over two key streams, Financial Management and Legal Practice Management.

The Legal Practice Manager will lead the Legal Practice Management stream. They will work under limited direction to undertake projects and tasks that contribute to innovation and business improvement strategies that deliver outcomes that align with the operational objective of legal practice management.

**Duties**
- Lead the adoption of best practice for matter management, record management, performance improvement, IT and administration systems and processes within the Division.
- Efficiently and effectively manage (and provide, where appropriate) timely expert support and guidance to divisional staff.
- Effectively spot and capitalise on opportunities to improve business practices.
- Research and provide innovative recommendations regarding systems and management issues.
- Prepare and review written material including business cases, reports and executive briefs and corporate documentation.
- Prepare relevant HR reporting and coordinate recruitment, staff movements and other HR management activities.
- Monitor key deadlines, follow-up responses, initiate contact, and proactively undertake mitigation actions where deadlines are close or have been exceeded.
- Build and maintain regular contact with the Principal Legal Officers/Directors and other key stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation or escalate issues arising within the practice.
- Represent DVA, General Counsel Division or Practice Management on various internal/external forum and provide effective input and explain the views of the agency/division/section.

**Highly Desirable**
- Contemporary knowledge and experiences relevant to this role (e.g. Practice Manager, Office Manager or Business Manager).
- Experience in improving the internal operations, procedures and performance of a legal practice.
