About the role
Expressions of Interest are sought for a Temporary Fulltime Advance Peer Worker within an Adult Acute Mental Health Unit, within West Moreton Mental Health and Specialised Services (MHSS) located at Ipswich Hospital. This position may also be required to work within the Older Persons Mental Health Unit located at Ipswich Hospital.
The Lived Experience Workforce (LEW) is dedicated to ensuring West Moreton Health supports consumers and carers to actively participate in their recovery journey. The LEW assists with providing a recovery-orientated and consumer-focused service that values the lived experience of both consumers and carers. The LEW undertakes a range of activities with consumers and staff including education, information provision and the promotion of consumer and carer participation.
The Mental Health Peer Worker role assists consumers, carers and families, service providers and Non-Government Organisations to develop a better understanding of the recovery framework while utilising a personal lived experience of mental health issues to work towards achieving the best outcomes for consumers. Personal knowledge of the mental health system helps support consumers to engage as partners in their journey through MHSS.
About you
The ideal person for this role will be someone who can demonstrate the following:
- demonstrated firsthand knowledge of the needs of consumers of a mental health service and the ability to represent these needs.
- demonstrated effective communication skills, verbal and written, with proven ability to work collaboratively with a range of people to convey consumers' needs.
- demonstrated ability to use a computer and skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with consumers, carers, and service providers, promoting an understanding of mental health and consumer-focused recovery-orientated service provision
- demonstrated effective skills in advocacy and negotiations on behalf of consumers.
- demonstrated ability to plan and deliver psycho education programs and groups to mental health service consumers.
- demonstrated ability to share lived experience of recovery to assist consumers and staff within the role.
- demonstrated honesty, integrity and respect for consumers, carers, the community, other health professional and all service providers.
**Mandatory Requirements**:
- A personal lived experience of mental illness and recovery and ability to advocate for and support people experiencing mental illness.
- A previous service user of mental health services and experience as a mental health consumer (public or private)
- Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive No. 01/16
- Vaccinated against COVID-19 as outlined in the Health Employment Directive No. 12/21 and the Queensland Health Human Resources Policy B70.
