Junior Environmental & Risk Specialist

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Environmental & Risk Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting sustainability initiatives and ensuring full SHER compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all incidents relevant to SHER are reported, investigated, corrected, and learnings disseminated.
  • Obtain and monitor all necessary environmental authorizations, operating licenses/permits, and ensure compliance with conditions.
  • Guarantee the company's adherence to all applicable SHER legislation and other requirements.
  • Monitor SHER performance by collecting data and producing statistical reports.
  • Verify that all legal appointments are in place in accordance with applicable legislation.
  • Develop and maintain an occupational health management and monitoring program.
  • Manage all SHER site surveys, audits, and assessments.
  • Drive a culture of quality, health, safety, and environment by promoting awareness through various initiatives, communication plans, and training.
  • Manage all SHER-related training needs.
  • Evaluate the site's current sustainability performance, identify key strategies, and prioritize initiatives to drive energy efficiencies, resource recovery, reduce waste, and increase efficiency.
  • Establish adequate plans/controls to prevent pollution, respond to emergencies, and ensure business continuity.
  • Ensure compliance with system and operational protocols, policies, and procedures at the site.
  • Review the implementation and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guarantee operational excellence.
  • Provide detailed audit reports with findings, identify non-conformities, and suggest corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor and review the implementation of corrective measures.
  • Maintain and enhance internal and external customer and contractor relationships.
  • Collaborate with the team on initiatives across the business and report on the reduction of the carbon footprint, GHG, NAEIS, etc.
  • Offer SHER improvement proposals, corrective actions, resources needed, and implementation plans for NCRs issued.

Requirements:

  • 3 years of experience.
  • NDip/ Degree in Environmental Management Sciences.
  • SAMTRAC (advantageous).
  • 3+ Years as an Environmental & Risk Officer.
  • Experience in the implementation of ISO 14001-2015 & ISO 45001.
  • Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001:2015, NEMA, OHSA, and other environmental standards.
