Forensic Scientist Role

The forensic services department is a professional laboratory providing a service to justice system participants and the public.

Our team plays a vital role in achieving these functions in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking biological casework with development towards complexity over time as part of a team.
  • Examining crime scenes and managing associated casework.
  • Providing a timely and quality forensic service in a multi-skilled environment.
  • Interpreting examinations, initiating problem identification and developing strategies to further investigate methods and procedures.
  • Maintaining equipment, instruments and documenting performance with respect to quality control criteria.
  • Providing recommendations to management on scientific and database procedures.
  • Responding to customer enquiries and maintaining computerised records.
  • Participating in accreditation duties and obligations as required.
  • Presentation of expert opinion evidence in Courts of Law relating to multi-disciplinary skills.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Scientific/technical achievement, ability to interpret examinations and present technical knowledge and advice.
  • Commitment to quality in casework or research.
  • Ability to work autonomously and/or within a team environment.
  • Conducting scene examinations with little or no supervisory advice.
  • Conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • An understanding of customer service requirements and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct.
