Job Description:

Role Overview

The Technical Officer will be responsible for undertaking fieldwork, collecting and managing data, preparing equipment, and collaborating with other teams. This role is ideal for individuals who possess a strong technical background and are able to work independently in a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Technical Officer include:

  • Conducting extensive fieldwork throughout Queensland, including overnight stays, to collect data and samples.
  • Collecting, collating, entering, checking, and manipulating data in the field, laboratory, and office with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Maintaining and working with equipment and consumables, including 12V battery charging systems, pumps, electronic water quality meters, nets, backpack electrofishers, and sundry field equipment.
  • Calibrating and operating electronic meters and/or collecting and counting aquatic macroinvertebrates and/or fish in the field and laboratory.
  • Assisting other teams within the department as necessary, which may include water quality sampling from boats.
  • Assisting in writing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, other operational documents, and reports, and undertaking administrative duties associated with scientific research and monitoring.
  • Maintaining a high level of personal and team safety, and scientific accuracy and integrity.
  • Working under the direction of a more experienced staff member within a tight-knit team.
  • Fostering a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engaging through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
Required Skills and Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have:

  • A minimum of a diploma in a field relevant to research and monitoring.
  • A current unrestricted driver's license.
  • The availability to begin work at 8am in-person in Brisbane.
  • A flexible schedule for the duration of the contract.
  • The ability to stay away from home during the week (up to four nights).
