Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader

The Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System identified primary schools as key opportunities to identify children with mental health and wellbeing challenges, which can be referred to treatment, care and support.

To address this, a whole-school approach to wellbeing will be implemented across the state by 2026. Every primary school will be able to employ a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader to implement this approach.

The role of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader is multifaceted, involving:

  • Building capability of the whole school regarding mental health and wellbeing (identification, promotion and prevention)
  • Providing support to staff to better identify and support students with mental health needs
  • Establishing clear pathways for referral for students requiring assessment and intervention, and monitoring and evaluating student progress

The position provides a proactive focus on promoting and preventing mental health and wellbeing through assessment and implementation of context-relevant programs, approaches and initiatives based on a broad and extensive knowledge of the needs of the school.

This requires ongoing training in mental health literacy, supporting emerging needs, and building school capacity. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader will receive ongoing support and professional development through structured and regular Learning Communities Training.

The Faculty of Education at University of Melbourne develops and facilitates this training, supported by Murdoch Children's Research Institute.

About This Role

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about promoting mental health and wellbeing in schools. As a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, you will play a critical role in ensuring that all students have access to the support they need to thrive.

You will work closely with teachers, students, and parents to develop and implement effective strategies for promoting mental health and wellbeing. This may involve working with schools to develop policies and procedures, providing training and support for staff, and coordinating programs and services.

If you are committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, we encourage you to apply for this role.
