About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Software Project Manager to join our Research Data and Software team at Macquarie University. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of complex software and data projects, providing expert direction, and driving project success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and track project progress against milestones and budgets, and prepare progress reports for senior management and stakeholders.
  • Develop software and data project plans, schedules, materials, and labor budgets for proposals, grant submissions, and internal project planning.
  • Consult with senior leadership regarding resource allocation requests and direct staff to conduct project-related tasks within project resource allocation.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, including university research offices and funding agencies, to facilitate project setup, advancement, and delivery.
  • Identify potential risks or challenges and leverage expertise to apply and test solutions to actively address and mitigate risks.
  • Employ agile software development methodologies, including daily standups, sprints, time-boxing, project kickoffs, and retrospectives.
About You

You will be a team player with a collaborative and growth mindset, possessing excellent communication and collaboration skills, coupled with strong organizational and technical skills. You will have substantial knowledge of all aspects of the software development lifecycle and have successfully managed a range of software projects through to delivery.

The Research Data and Software team is a key part of our faculty, delivering initiatives and projects in areas such as instrument control, web development, data and workflow management, data reduction and analysis, and mobile applications. As a Software Project Manager, you will play a critical role in driving project success and contributing to the team's mission.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma, or higher, in software engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience providing project management expertise to technical projects to solve complex technical and/or engineering problems.
  • Sound working knowledge of agile project management methodologies, principles, and practices in the context of delivering software projects.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, including the ability to develop and maintain relationships with team members and a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver effective project outcomes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and in writing, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts effectively to a non-expert audience.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize your workload to meet deadlines and work objectives.
  • Experience in resource planning, across a suite of projects.
Desirable
  • Experience working in a tertiary education organization and an understanding of the operating environment.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and innovation and keeping current with issues affecting the industry and its technologies.
