PhD Researcher in Climate Mitigation Modelling

The Sustainability Assessment Program at UNSW Sydney invites applications for a PhD position in climate mitigation modelling.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled candidate to work on a project that aims to develop enhanced modelling techniques for simulating degrowth pathways in Australia. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a team of internationally recognised researchers and contribute to the development of new modelling frameworks.

About the Project:

  • Develop and apply novel degrowth modelling approaches to simulate future climate mitigation scenarios in Australia.
  • Integrate and intercompare different modelling paradigms to advance scholarship and practice in sustainability and climate mitigation research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement novel econometric models to represent degrowth policies and their effects on greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Develop and apply advanced data analysis techniques to evaluate scenario outcomes and reconfigure model parameters according to stakeholder feedback.
  • Collaborate with the project team to formulate, intercompare and synthesise alternative scenario pathways from different models.

Requirements:

  • A first-class Honours or Masters degree in economics, sciences or engineering.
  • Strong experience in computer programming and data management, including proficiency in Python and familiarity with industrial ecology virtual laboratories.
  • Excellent written and communication skills, with ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
