Mission Australia is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Youth Outreach Worker to join our team in Northbridge, WA. As a key member of our YouthBeat service, you will play a vital role in supporting young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the Perth CBD and Northbridge area.

About the Role

This is a part-time position, working 2 nights a week (Friday and Saturday) from 8pm to 5am. As a Youth Outreach Worker, you will provide brief intervention, harm reduction, safety assessment and planning, referrals, and practical support to young people, including transport and follow-up support for young people and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate Youth at Risk Strategy (YARS) Initiative shifts, including street-based outreach engagement and support vulnerable and at-risk young people in the CBD and Northbridge area.
  • Provide trauma-informed, person-centered support to vulnerable young people using culturally secure and solution-focused approaches.
  • Deliver assertive outreach to young people in Perth CBD using a vehicle and foot patrols.
  • Provide safe transports for young people to approved locations.
  • Use your skills and understanding of current issues impacting young people to build rapport and engage with street-present young people.
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders and the YouthBeat team to ensure young people have the best opportunity for success.
Requirements for Success

To be successful in this role, you will have a significant background in the child, youth, and family and/or homelessness or AOD sectors. You will be confident in your support and assessment processes and have:

  • A Degree or Diploma in Youth Work, Social Work, Social Sciences, Psychology, or a minimum of three years' experience in a similar role.
  • Proven assertive outreach work experience in engaging and supporting at-risk young people, including working with intoxicated young people and people experiencing homelessness.
  • Experience and ability to work with at-risk young people, including knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  • Strong assessment, general counseling, and crisis intervention skills, including working with people experiencing alcohol and other drug use issues, mental health issues, in mental health crisis, and families in crisis.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations people and communities.
  • Strong time management and administration skills, including computer skills in Microsoft Office, and ability to adopt Mission Australia's web-based Information Management system (training will be provided).
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including report writing and data collection.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Full driver's license with no restrictions.
