Defendant Institutional Tort Claims Lawyer

  • This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate litigator to join our team and play a crucial role in providing legal support and representation to clients.

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years post-admission experience in general insurance matters, with a strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure, and relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Managing a caseload of defendant institutional tort claims from inception to resolution with adequate supervision.
  2. Conducting legal research, drafting pleadings, and preparing various legal documents.
  3. Analysing complex legal issues, reviewing case material, gathering evidence, and assessing liability and damages.
  4. Collaborating with senior lawyers to develop and execute defence strategies.
  5. Attending negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
  6. Providing ongoing legal advice and guidance to clients throughout the litigation process.
  7. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date case files, ensuring compliance with client service standards.
  8. Staying up-to-date on relevant legal developments and changes in legislation pertaining to institutional abuse claims.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Laws or equivalent and a current New South Wales practising certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year's post-admission experience in general insurance matters.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure, and relevant legislation.
  • Confidence to deal directly with clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with experts in multiple fields.
  • High degree of initiative, dedication and organisation ability with a strong client and commercial focus.
  • Ability to manage a busy workload and work to tight deadlines.
