The Role

We are seeking an experienced litigator to join our general insurance team as a full-time defendant institutional tort claims lawyer. As a specialist in this field, you will play a critical role in providing legal support and representation to our clients, contributing significantly to their success.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Managing a caseload of defendant institutional tort claims from inception to resolution under close supervision.
  • Conducting thorough research, drafting pleadings, and preparing essential legal documents.
  • Analyzing complex legal issues, reviewing case materials, gathering evidence, and assessing liability and damages.
  • Collaborating with senior lawyers to develop and execute effective defence strategies.
  • Attending negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
  • Providing ongoing guidance and advice to clients throughout the litigation process.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date case files, adhering to client service standards.
  • Staying current on relevant legal developments and changes in legislation related to institutional abuse claims.

Requirements

To excel in this role, you should have:

  • A Bachelor of Laws or equivalent degree, along with a valid practising certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year's post-admission experience in general insurance matters.
  • In-depth knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure, and relevant legislation.
  • Confidence in communicating directly with clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills with experts across multiple fields.
  • A high degree of initiative, dedication, and organisation, coupled with a strong focus on clients and commercial outcomes.
  • Ability to manage a busy workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • A commercial approach and capacity to articulate and negotiate effectively.
