Homework Support Volunteer Role

We are seeking a volunteer to provide support for students from refugee and migrant backgrounds at our Homework Club.

About the Initiative

The Homework Club is an educational program developed by Jesuit Social Services in 2004, serving the local community of Somali, Eritrean, Oromo, Sudanese, and Ethiopian people who have arrived in Australia as refugees and migrants within the past decade.

Purpose of the Homework Club

To enhance educational opportunities for school-aged students from refugee and migrant backgrounds by providing homework support and mentorship.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the tutoring environment settings
  • Ensure students and tutors sign in and out correctly
  • Liaise with parents/guardians
  • Supervise students and support volunteer tutors as required
  • Support the club coordinator as needed
  • Assist in gathering forms and general administrative duties
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Friendly and genuine interest in supporting young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds
  • Patient and adaptable
  • Understanding of structural barriers impacting learning and engagement
  • Open-minded and curious while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Willingness to work in a community setting
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong verbal and written English skills
