Niddrie Autistic School is a public school that specializes in providing an exemplary education for students with autism. The school's foundation is built on a reputation for excellence, communicated to staff, students and families.

The school has high expectations and believes that every child can learn and achieve. Staff have developed profound expertise in developing and implementing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and assessing and monitoring the learning of students.

The school is located 16 kilometers north of the Central Business District (CBD) in the suburb of Niddrie. It enrolls students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The philosophy of the school is to provide an intensive program for students with autism to build their social communication and sense of self and others. This will guide their inclusion and participation through their early years of schooling and beyond.

To support the needs of autistic children and their families, the school provides initial support for each student as he/she moves to their designated neighbourhood mainstream or special school setting.

Responsibilities
  1. Teaching of groups of students and individual students;
  2. Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum program within the school;
  3. Undertaking other classroom teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal;
  4. Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings; staff meetings; camps and excursions;
Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in responding to student learning needs;
  • Demonstrated experience in planning for and implementing high impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth;
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning;
  • Demonstrated experience in using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement;
  • Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values;
  • Demonstrated experience in reflecting upon practice and engaging in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching;
Requirements

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
