About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vice President, Senior Legal Counsel to join our team at MUFG Bank, Ltd., Australia. As a key member of our legal team, you will be responsible for providing strategic legal advice and guidance to our business units in Oceania.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a robust legal risk management framework to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and mitigate potential risks.
  • Provide timely and effective legal advice to our human resources, compliance, and financial crime prevention functions in Oceania.
  • Manage and control legal risk, including litigation management risk, by providing guidance to our business units on dispute resolution and pre-dispute actions.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with our business units, providing commercially sensitive and pragmatic legal support and advice.
  • Stay up-to-date with material legal developments and provide guidance to our business units on relevant issues.
  • Collaborate with our global legal team to ensure consistency and best practices in legal risk management.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 6-8 years of post-qualification work experience in a common law jurisdiction.
  • Lawyer qualified in a common law jurisdiction, ideally Australian or New Zealand qualified.
  • Prior experience in regulatory compliance, HR, litigation, or legal risk management.
  • Prior in-house legal experience in a financial institution would be an advantage.
  • Broad experience across banking and lending, wholesale/investment banking products, and capital markets.
  • Strong technical knowledge of legal frameworks surrounding finance transactions and strong document drafting skills.
  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements relating to finance and banking.
  • Self-motivated and independent, with the ability to clearly challenge process and decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage large workloads and tight deadlines.
