The role of a Counsellor is to provide full-time counselling and academic guidance to students presenting with a range of needs. This includes offering referrals, pastoral care, and support of the Mental Health Strategic objectives.
The Counsellor must ensure confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriateness of service for adult students. The role involves becoming conversant with policies and involved in their review, revision, and implementation. It also requires adhering to higher education policies informed by ASQA/TEQSA and the Higher Education Standards Framework.
The Counsellor will work with leadership to monitor and implement higher education risk management mitigation strategies for students' wellbeing. They will provide general advice to students regarding various issues, dilemmas, and problems related to course progress, personal problems, accommodation, workplace relations, job search, and career development.
The Counsellor will develop and maintain appropriate documentation of counselee appointments and conduct regular welfare and progress checks. They will liaise with the Head of Department and other colleagues to ensure that students are supported during their work placement visits and follow up with those who do not complete the standard hours or meet the requirements of the course.
The Counsellor will keep up to date with legislation, government policy changes, and key TEQSA directives that affect the way they are required to comply. They will prepare templates, forms, brochures, and relevant procedures that would be supportive of students' welfare, work, academic, and personal needs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
A tertiary qualification/training in counselling, mental health, psychology, or social work is essential. Registration with the appropriate professional regulatory organisation for your profession is also required. Three years' experience in providing counselling services addressing emotional and/or behavioural needs to At-Risk students is desirable.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of current VIC Child Protection Legislation and adolescent development and mental health issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with multiple stakeholders, are also necessary.
