About the Role

This role is crucial in providing engineering expertise and collaborating across departments to support our mission of advancing Townsville and executing the Corporate Plan in partnership with the community. Reporting to the General Manager of Engineering and Asset Infrastructure Planning, this position prioritizes the needs and aspirations of the Townsville community, fostering customer relationships, cultivating a culture of accountability, and innovating service delivery to maximize community value.

Responsibilities include planning and modeling transport networks (such as roads, pathways, and cycleways) to facilitate growth in alignment with Corporate Plan objectives; identifying project scopes for transport network enhancements; and conducting analysis and conceptual design for infrastructure upgrades.

Additionally, this role involves providing expert engineering advice to the Council and stakeholders regarding the implications of development proposals on the transport network, including the review of Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) reports from consultants.

About You

The ideal candidate will possess:

Level 6 Key Requirements – (Traffic and Infrastructure Planning Engineer)

  • A Bachelor's degree and full membership of Engineers Australia with post-nominals MIEAust.
  • A minimum of 3 years of postgraduate experience in civil engineering.
  • Familiarity with local government operations, including development assessment, strategic planning, and engineering functions.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant codes and guidelines for traffic and transport planning, including Austroads guides, Transport and Main Roads Guides, and relevant Australian Standards.
  • Proficiency in computerized traffic and transport modeling, preferably Aimsun and SIDRA.
  • Understanding of growth modeling.
  • Experience in interpreting infrastructure planning reports and preparing technical documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to work effectively in both specialized and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, and ideally MS Project. Familiarity with ArcGIS in an infrastructure planning context is advantageous.
  • A current Queensland 'C' Class driver's license.

Additional Level 7 Key Requirements – (Senior Traffic and Infrastructure Planning Engineer)

  • Registration with the Board of Professional Engineers in Queensland (RPEQ).
  • At least 5 years of postgraduate experience in civil engineering.
  • High-level project management skills with a strong ability to prioritize and manage workloads.

Additional Level 8 Key Requirements – (Principal Traffic and Infrastructure Planning Engineer)

  • Registration as a Senior Road Safety Auditor recognized by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
  • A minimum of 7 years of postgraduate experience in civil engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of transport infrastructure charging and related legislation.
