Devonport, Tasmania, Australia New Zealand Defence Force Full time

About the Role

The Navy Steward is a unique opportunity to provide exceptional hospitality services to high-profile individuals, including Heads of State and members of the Royal Family. As a Steward, you will be responsible for providing table service to up to three meals a day, bartending, and setting up and serving at official functions. You will also provide VIP support to international and diplomatic functions.

Your career as a Steward will begin with initial and professional training, followed by practical, supervised on-the-job training. You will have the opportunity to gain experience through postings ashore and at sea, and you will be eligible to sit external, industry-recognised NZQA qualifications. Further training will assist with your professional development and progression in the Navy and wider Defence force.

As a Steward, you will be part of a small team that provides hospitality services to the Ship's Officers and ships formal events. You will have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including cocktail parties, formal dinners, buffets, and morning and afternoon teas.

Career Progression

Your hard work, experience, and training accomplishments as a Steward are rewarded by promotions in rank and salary. Following your initial training and consolidation, you can reasonably be expected to have attained a basic level of competence within 18 months of joining. This will be supplemented by a sea posting and then further training to prepare you for promotion to a supervisory role.

Advanced training will involve both generic leadership skills and development as a steward. Successful completion of these will qualify you for a promotion to Leading Hand, whereby you will be responsible for supervising a team of stewards, either at sea or ashore.

Salary and Benefits

Careers in the Navy are well-rewarded, as well as being diverse and exciting. As you become more experienced and move up through the ranks, gaining additional skills and qualifications, you will see your salary rise accordingly.

The starting salary for a Steward is $64,177, and there are opportunities for career advancement and salary increases. In addition to salary, you will also receive a range of benefits, including access to your Service marae or tūrangawaewae, sponsored tertiary study programmes at all levels, and free access to gyms and swimming pools on camp and bases.

Requirements

To be eligible to become a Steward, you must be at least 17 years of age, be free of any criminal conviction for the previous two years, and meet the minimum entry fitness standards. You must also be medically fit for service and meet the minimum citizenship and security requirements for the trade.
