Medical Laboratory Specialist

The Medical Laboratory Specialist plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing various laboratory procedures under supervision.

They use standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment to analyze biological specimens and provide critical test results to physicians and healthcare teams.

This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform laboratory procedures as outlined in procedure manuals using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure accurate and timely test results.
  • Assume accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the expectations defined in the employee handbook and departmental policies.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Completed one year in an approved program or equivalent with an accredited recognized agency or organization.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or Categorical certification in area of experience from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory procedures, protocols, and instructions.
  • Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by the department.
  • Minimum of 12 continuing education credits required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
