Open Cut Operations Manager

Peabody is currently seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Open Cut Operations Manager.

The successful candidate will lead the open cut operations team and be responsible for delivering established business and production targets in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

  1. Champion a proactive safety culture by ensuring compliance with the site's Safety and Health Management Plan, leading safety initiatives, and fostering open communication across all teams.
  2. Develop, execute, and track the annual Mining Business Plan, driving continuous improvement and embedding best practice operational standards.
  3. Provide strategic oversight of open cut operations, including short, medium, and long-term mine planning, with a focus on optimisation, cost efficiency, and sustainable production outcomes.
  4. Oversee the integration and scheduling of people and equipment to align with mine planning objectives, ensuring efficient and reliable delivery of operational targets.
  5. Identify operational risks and cost variances early, escalate critical issues with solutions, and implement strategies to meet or exceed physical and financial performance targets.
  6. Manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with unit cost objectives and effective utilisation of site assets to meet production and maintenance goals.
  7. Lead contractor performance within the open cut department, ensuring accountability, safety, and alignment with operational objectives.

This is a key leadership role within the open cut operations team and requires a strong understanding of open cut coal mining operations, commercial acumen, and technical services experience.

Key attributes we are looking for:

  • Proven leadership in open cut operations, ideally with experience in production and sound understanding of technical services.
  • Strong commercial acumen with skills in cost management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging senior leadership, regulators, and cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in integrated management systems and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with mining engineering packages will be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of coal mining legislation and risk management principles.
  • Ability to obtain or work towards a Surface Mine Managers qualification in line with the upcoming competencies and statutory qualification requirements.
  • Qualifications in ICAM and Risk Assessment Facilitation (desirable).
