AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. Its purpose is to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are committed to a net zero economy by 2050, and our vision is to enable this. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

AEMO's Operational Support division plays a critical role in real-time electricity system operations across Australia. The division supports AEMO's control rooms through high-quality data, systems, training, assessment, and operational planning advice. The Operational Forecasting team is responsible for short-term forecasts that feed into key operational and market systems in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). These forecasts are essential for network outage planning, reliability assessments, and real-time operational decision-making.

The team is recognized globally for leadership in short-term forecasting practices and is expanding to meet the increasing complexity of weather-dependent power systems.

What you will be doing

As an Analyst, you will develop, implement, and improve forecast models for electricity demand, distributed photovoltaics (PV), and renewable energy generation in the NEM and WEM.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Managing operational forecasting models for demand, rooftop PV, solar farms, and wind farms, updating inputs and parameters to reflect system changes and improve performance.
  • Collaborating with weather providers and control rooms to translate weather risks into system impacts and ensure operators have necessary information.
  • Coordinating across teams and markets to align tools, data, and processes between the NEM and WEM.
  • Providing energy and weather insights for operational advisories, incident reviews, and market reports.
  • Supporting upgrades and digital enhancements of forecasting systems to improve their performance and reliability.

What you will bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in science, engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or a related field.
  • Experience in the energy sector or similar, preferably in forecasting or analytical roles.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience preparing reports and presentations for diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and statistical modeling tools such as PowerBI, Databricks, SQL, and Excel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple projects in a team environment.

Benefits include:

  • Flexible work arrangements: work from home, part-time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave.
  • Professional development opportunities: projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance, and more.
  • Up to 4 days of volunteering leave annually.
  • Performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Wellness programs, discounted health insurance, gym perks, and Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Our commitment

We value diversity and inclusion, welcoming all backgrounds, including people with disabilities, neurodivergence, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Please inform us of any accessibility requirements during your application or interview process.
