About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Engineering to join our team at Smart Pension. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of our technology strategy, driving innovation and excellence in engineering practices, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead the Engineering Team: Oversee the overall engineering team, including developers, QA, infrastructure, and the service desk, across all territories, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment.
  2. Drive Technical Excellence: Review and assess current engineering practices and implement continuous improvement programs to drive faster and leaner development cycles.
  3. Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with Solutions and Product Directors to streamline the process from product conception to delivery.
  4. Ensure Quality and Reliability: Continuously enhance and develop automated test coverage and test automation to maintain and improve the platform's codebase, aiming to exceed the current 96% test coverage.
  5. Balance Business Objectives and Technical Requirements: Balance architectural desire against project delivery - tradeoffs between performance, delivery, reliability & scalability whilst mapping against business objectives and deadlines.
  6. Represent the Engineering Team: Act as the representative of the engineering team to the wider business, keeping them informed and engaged in the development processes and progress updates.
  7. Manage Appraisals and Workloads: Manage appraisals, salary reviews, and day-to-day workloads.
  8. Lead and Develop the Engineering Organisation: Lead and develop the Engineering organisation which includes our nearshore teams as well as our direct teams.
  9. Identify and Solve Barriers and Risks: Proactively identify and solve any barriers, risks, and issues preventing success.
  10. Ensure Effective Budget Planning and Resource Forecasting: Ensure effective budget planning, resource forecasting, internal reporting, and engagement in all relevant governance forums and processes.
Requirements
  1. Proven Leadership Experience: Demonstrable experience as a Director, Head of Engineering, or a CTO.
  2. Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of software development methodologies, architectural patterns, and best practices.
  3. Leadership Skills: Strong leadership skills - this is a leadership role that is all about leading teams and getting the best from our incredible Engineers.
  4. Effective Team Player: Effective team player and collaborator able to work seamlessly across departments.
  5. Experience with API-Based Application Development: Experience with API-based application development is essential.
  6. Proven Experience in Software Architecture and Transformation Projects: Proven experience in software architecture and leading large-scale transformation projects.
  7. Personable and Appreciative Leader: Personable and appreciative, leading teams with a people-first approach.
  8. Familiarity with Modern DevOps Tools and Practices: Familiarity with modern DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
