About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Engineering to join our team at Smart Pension. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of our technology strategy, driving innovation and excellence in engineering practices, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions.

About the Role

The Director of Engineering will be responsible for:

  • Leading the engineering team, including developers, QA, infrastructure, and service desk, to ensure efficient and effective output.
  • Overseeing the overall engineering process, including product conception to delivery, to ensure seamless collaboration and alignment.
  • Collaborating with Solutions and Product Directors to streamline the development process and drive business outcomes.
  • Reviewing and assessing current engineering practices and implementing continuous improvement programs to drive faster and leaner development cycles.
  • Enhancing and developing automated test coverage and test automation to maintain and improve the platform's codebase.
  • Balancing architectural desire against project delivery, ensuring trade-offs between performance, delivery, reliability, and scalability.
  • Representing the engineering team to the wider business, keeping them informed and engaged in development processes and progress updates.
  • Managing appraisals, salary reviews, and day-to-day workloads.
  • Leading and developing the Engineering organization, including nearshore teams and direct teams.
  • Proactively identifying and solving barriers, risks, and issues preventing success.
  • Ensuring effective budget planning, resource forecasting, internal reporting, and engagement in governance forums and processes.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Director, Head of Engineering, or CTO.
  • Proven background in a fast-scaling technology business and financial services in their recent career history.
  • Strong leadership skills, with a people-first approach to leadership.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies, architectural patterns, and best practices.
  • Effective team player and collaborator, able to work seamlessly across departments.
  • Strong experience and governance across back-end and front-end development.
  • Able to lead complex projects, manage multiple stakeholders, and deliver to targets.
  • Strong communicator, comfortable communicating across the business and at all levels.
  • Experience with API-based application development.
  • Proven experience in software architecture and leading large-scale transformation projects.
  • Personable and appreciative, leading teams with a people-first approach.
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps tools and practices, including CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
