
Community Development Specialist

As a Local Area Coordinator, you will work on a full or part-time basis from one of our sites in Western Australia, supporting projects across the state and regions in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Aligned with the Australian Disability Strategy, you will collaborate with people with disability to identify and overcome barriers to access and inclusion through community-based project work.
You will improve the community's knowledge of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and disability, working alongside different stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to the barriers identified by people with disability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage and build relationships with Aboriginal Corporations, local stakeholder organisations, and Aboriginal people living with a disability, their carers, families, and support networks to increase their capacity and understanding of disability supports such as the NDIS.
- Lead, develop, and implement local projects in collaboration with community stakeholders through a project management approach.
- Ensure sustainability of projects through relationship building and capacity building of the community.
- Facilitate activities to progress the NDIS First Nations strategy, including the use of culturally responsive disability resources and engagement in appropriate protocols.
What We're Looking For
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- Demonstrated relevant experience and/or lived experience working with people with disability and/or First Nations, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD), or LGBTQIA+ communities.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of First Nations people/s cultures, inclusive of history, traditional, and contemporary values and protocols, and other issues relevant to First Nations people/s communities in an urban setting.
- The ability to assist people with disability to identify and achieve positive outcomes and community links they desire.
- Commitment and ability to work with local stakeholders to undertake community projects.
- Ability (or interest) to give virtual and group presentations.
- Demonstrated computer skills, including capability with Microsoft Office 365.
- Knowledge of the Australian Disability Strategy.
- Knowledge of the NDIS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Strategy.
- Knowledge of project management frameworks that support the delivery of sustainable community capacity building outcomes.
- Access to your own transport.
- A current Working with Children Check.
