Role Overview

The Australian Government is seeking an exceptional leader to spearhead the Defence and Veterans' Service Commissioner role.

This new, independent entity was established in response to a Royal Commission recommendation aimed at enhancing suicide prevention and wellbeing outcomes for Defence Force members.

The Commissioner will provide strategic direction to oversee reforms across the Defence ecosystem, upholding independence and integrity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead system-wide reform initiatives within the Defence environment.
  • Exercise legislative powers while maintaining operational independence.
  • Develop key relationships with stakeholders, including those with lived experience of suicide and suicidality.
  • Provide expert advice on systemic reforms to enhance wellbeing outcomes.
Eligibility and Appointment Criteria

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals who possess the necessary skills and expertise.

The appointed candidate will serve as Defence and Veterans' Service Commissioner on a full-time basis for a maximum period of five years.
