Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated individuals to join our team as interns in the Sydney office of Human Rights Watch. This role is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in human rights advocacy, development, and outreach.

About the Role

This internship provides a unique chance to work on projects surrounding domestic and international issues of Australia, focusing on elements of the work carried out by both the Advocacy and Development and Outreach Departments. Interns will be offered a range of tasks that align with their interests and skills, including:

  • Conducting background research and fact-checking;
  • Assisting with preparation of published materials, e.g., op-eds, dispatches, press releases, and daily monitoring of news and current affairs;
  • Monitoring press coverage and updating lists;
  • Supporting outreach tasks regarding human rights in the Asia region, with a particular focus on Australia;
  • Using databases and supporting with tasks relating to event planning;
Responsibilities

As a Global Human Rights Advocacy and International Development Professional intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work closely with HRW staff to understand the organization's goals and objectives;
  • Participate in weekly HRW staff meetings, online meetings with global development colleagues, and external HRW events;
  • Gain insight into the workings of an international human rights organization;
  • Interact with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials;
  • Become familiar with Salesforce and other relevant tools and software;
  • Develop your skills in fundraising, media, social media, government relations, event planning, and data analysis;
Qualifications

To be considered for this internship, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled students for the duration of the internship;
  • Have a strong interest in international human rights;
  • Be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable;
  • Possess valid work authorization in Australia for the duration of their internship;
  • Have experience with Microsoft Office and other relevant computer software;
Compensation

Interns will receive a competitive stipend of $20 per day for lunch expenses and $25 per day for transportation expenses, up to a maximum of $500 per month. Students may also arrange academic credit through their institution.
