Role Overview

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking experienced and passionate individuals to work as Remote Census Engagement Managers for the 2026 Census.

As a Remote Census Engagement Manager, you will play a key role in maximising participation in the Census by connecting the ABS to stakeholders and members of the community in regional and remote areas.

You will assist Census operational teams in achieving outcomes through targeted engagement activities, including planning, coordinating and delivering Census engagement activities for your assigned region.

This may involve working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, local governments and community organisations to promote participation in the Census.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver Census engagement activities for your assigned region.
  • Maintain a record of your engagement activities via the Stakeholder Management System.
  • Develop, update and review engagement plans for your area of responsibility.
  • Promote participation in the Census through community visits, promotional activities and presentations.
  • Connect with the community, establish networks and maintain those relationships.

Requirements:

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience or knowledge in working with or advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to connect and engage with a range of service providers, communicate effectively, and develop strong working relationships.
  • Communicating sensitively and effectively to present information to both small and large groups or communities.
  • Capability to work independently, prioritise tasks with limited guidance, and make decisions independently.
  • Sound local area knowledge and the ability to read and navigate maps.
