
Aviation Safety Specialist

This pivotal role ensures proactive oversight and management of aviation safety within the Maintenance organisation. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership to enhance and mature aviation safety management policies, risk management strategies, assurance practices, and safety culture across the Maintenance function in Australia and New Zealand.
Key Responsibilities- Risk Management: Increase proactive reporting for the MRO function; Facilitate and coordinate risk management processes and Top Safety Enhancer activities; Proactively identify, assess, and manage aviation safety risks to ensure controls are effective and risks are minimised SFARP (So Far As Reasonably Practicable); Verify mitigation effectiveness and monitor safety outcomes; Provide input to the Change Management process (e.g., Maintenance risk assessments).
- Safety Assurance: Mature and integrate Maintenance policies with the Integrated Safety Management System (iSMS) and SMS regulations; Monitor and report on aviation safety culture metrics (KPIs); Ensure compliance with Defence and Civil SMS regulations.
- Safety Promotion: Develop and deliver targeted aviation safety training, promotion, and communication strategies; Lead safety campaigns and facilitate stakeholder engagement through surveys and interviews; Drive positive aviation safety culture and behaviours across the Maintenance function; Share lessons learned and best practices with the global aviation safety community.
- Leadership and Advisory: Advise Accountable Managers and the Senior Manager Aviation Safety on all safety management matters; Propose and deliver safety objectives aligned with organisational goals; Interface with regulators and ensure regulatory compliance; Prepare and lead aviation safety reviews within the Maintenance function; Provide expert investigation support for aviation safety occurrences, including leading major incident investigations.
You should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in aircraft maintenance engineering (Part 145 or equivalent) and a strong understanding of aviation regulations. You will need to work autonomously, meet tight deadlines, and operate in a continuous improvement environment. Key skills include:
- Proven ability to resolve airworthiness and safety-related issues with strong analytical and strategic problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and manage conflicting priorities in a matrix organisation.
