Job Title: Media Communicator

The role involves the creation of clear, concise captions for television programming and audio-visual media.

Captioners must possess a strong understanding of English grammar and spelling to convey information accurately to deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers.

Live captions are produced using voice recognition software and respeaking. Captioners also speak punctuation and commands to create real-time captions for live broadcasts like news and sports.

Pre-recorded captions are time-coded to match the audio track. Captioners must consider reading speeds, descriptive labels, and conveying the program's feel.

This position requires working in a broadcast environment, providing services 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Captioners must be flexible and work varied shifts with early starts or late finishes.

Responsibilities:
  • Create clear, easy-to-read captions using various software
  • Become familiar with captioning techniques, including pre-prepared captioning and respeaking
  • Work accurately and calmly to tight deadlines, including live-to-air captioning
  • Collaborate with other captioners remotely
  • Proofread and review your work to ensure high standards
  • Take ownership of quality and timely delivery
  • Have an excellent standard of English, attention to detail, and computer literacy
  • Be open to feedback and willing to learn new techniques
