Junior Environmental & Risk Officer Role

We are seeking a talented Junior Environmental & Risk Officer to join our team. This role is responsible for supporting sustainability initiatives and ensuring full compliance with Safety, Health, Environment & Risk (SHER) protocols.

About the Role

The Junior Environmental & Risk Officer will work closely with our team to develop and implement environmental policies, manage SHER systems, and report on performance. Key responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Implementing risk control measures
  • Developing environmental policies
  • Managing SHER systems and reporting

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • 3 years of experience in environmental management or a related field
  • A degree in Environmental Management Sciences or a related field
  • SAMTRAC certification (an advantage)
  • Experience with ISO 14001:2015, NEMA, OHSA, and other environmental standards
Duties & Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring that all incidents relevant to SHER are reported, investigated, corrected, and learnings disseminated
  • Ensuring that all relevant environmental authorisations, operating licenses/permits are applied for, up-to-date, and compliance to conditions is monitored
  • Ensuring the company is compliant with all applicable SHER legislation and other requirements to which the company subscribes
  • Monitoring SHER performance by gathering relevant data and producing statistical reports
  • Ensuring that all legal appointments are in place in terms of applicable legislation
  • Developing and maintaining the occupational health management and monitoring programme
  • Managing all SHER site surveys, audits, and assessments
  • Driving the culture of quality, health, safety, and environment by raising awareness of SHEQ throughout the site through various initiatives, communication plans, and training
  • Managing all SHER-related training requirements
  • Assessing the site's current sustainability performance, identifying and prioritizing the site's key sustainability strategies, e.g., drive energy efficiencies, resource recovery, reduce waste, and increase efficiencies
  • Developing adequate plans/controls to prevent pollution, respond to emergencies, and ensure business continuity
  • Ensuring compliance with system and operational protocols, policies, and procedures at the site
  • Reviewing the implementation and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure operational excellence
  • Providing detailed audit reports with findings, identify non-conformities, and provide corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Monitoring and reviewing the implementation of corrective measures
  • Maintaining and enhancing internal and external customer and contractor relations
  • Liaising with the team on initiatives throughout the business and report on the reduction of the carbon footprint, GHG, NAEIS, etc.
  • Providing SHER improvement proposals, corrective actions, resources needed, and implementation plans for NCRs issued
