Job Description:

We're seeking an accomplished Principal Engineer to join our Ask team, where you'll play a critical role in guiding our teams in executing projects, identifying architectural improvements, and defining our search technology strategy.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to build trust, provide empathetic support, and identify key challenges.
  • Define and communicate our search technology strategy, working closely with Technical Leadership to drive innovation and excellence.
  • Identify, prioritize, and solve systemic technical challenges, ensuring seamless customer experiences and robust search systems.
Key Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for:

  • Architecting and building scalable indexing pipelines, query understanding systems, and relevance tuning mechanisms.
  • Designing and implementing advanced search systems that meet the highest quality standards.
  • Advocating for and maintaining engineering quality, supporting team members in understanding performance expectations.
Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • Extensive experience building search systems, including hands-on exposure to designing and implementing search infrastructure using technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, or vector databases.
  • Excellent communication skills, enabling you to convey complex search architectures and articulate query performance vs. relevance tradeoffs.
  • Experience managing complex search infrastructure, designing and delivering complex search features, and optimizing indexing pipelines.
