Litigation & Corporate Team

You will join a dynamic team of legal officers to guide the Department of Education through complex legal frameworks, working across a broad range of stakeholders and areas of law. We provide advice to schools and business units, draft research-based legal advice, negotiate with defendants and claimant solicitors, provide representation in tribunal matters, court hearings, and mediations, and prepare a wide range of legal documents. This role provides an opportunity to work on various projects and assist in the development of effective strategies for legal reform across the Department and cluster agencies.

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Officer Grade 3/4 provides high-level litigation and/or legal advice, briefings, and correspondence in areas of law relevant to the NSW Department of Education. Key accountabilities include:

  • ">
  • Providing high-level legal services and advice;">
  • Interpreting, analysing, and preparing complex legal documents;">
  • Representing the department before courts and tribunals, and in contract and settlement negotiations;">
  • Providing high-level legal advice and recommendations on the development and implementation of legal standards and practices, strategies, systems, procedures, and processes for the practice area;">
  • Supporting the practice area team in delivering legal education and training programs;">
  • Helping to collect and analyse legal data to deliver reports that inform and improve the department's operations.">

Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge

">

Your professional credentials, experience, and expertise include:

  • ">
  • Legal qualifications and a current NSW practising certificate;">
  • Experience as a solicitor practicing in the area of employment law or similar;">
  • Knowledge and experience in the areas of law that impact the department;">
  • The ability to provide quality independent legal advice and explain legal issues;">
  • Complementary capabilities in statutory interpretation, legal research, legal drafting, litigation, dispute resolution, and advocacy;">
  • A Working with Children Check clearance for paid employment, or a willingness to apply for clearance;">
  • Knowledge of and a commitment to the department's Aboriginal education policies;">
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.">

Estimated Salary Range

">

$112,849 - $131,799 per annum plus superannuation and leave loading, based on location and position level.
