Job Title: Early Childhood Education and Care Assistant

We are seeking one or two qualified Early Childhood Education and Care Assistants to help manage our playgroup at a weekly gathering for local mums and their babies.

The successful candidates will need to be available to work on Wednesdays, starting at 9.00 am for a minimum of five hours.

We expect around 12 young mums, mostly from the Aboriginal community, to attend Baabayn's Centre during the school terms. They bring their children, including babies, and while the babies usually stay with their mothers, the other children are cared for by a team of up to four educators.

To ensure we can meet ratio requirements, we aim to appoint two new educators.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assist in delivering culturally appropriate and engaging activities for the children to occupy them during group time, support their intellectual and emotional development, and contribute to their cultural education.
  • Build respectful relationships with all the children, nurturing their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Gauge and respond to the children's needs and reasonable requests.
  • E nsure that healthy snacks and water are always available to the children.
  • Help keep the children safe at all times, monitoring indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Attend to each child's individual health needs and provide first aid as required.
  • Watch for and appropriately respond to any signs that a child is facing difficulties or complex issues outside Baabayn, in accordance with Baabayn's Child Protection and Child Safety Policies.
Requirements:
  • A Certificate III or Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care or equivalent qualification, with evidence of keeping professional knowledge up-to-date since obtaining the qualification.
  • At least one year of experience working with preschool children—preferably Aboriginal preschool children—in an Early Childhood Education and Care role.
  • The ability to draw on the resources of Aboriginal culture when working with small children.
  • A friendly, approachable, sensitive personality.
  • Resourcefulness in keeping small children engaged.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with small children.
  • Basics knowledge of food hygiene and nutrition for young children.
