Academic Leadership Opportunity in Surgery

UNSW seeks a highly skilled and experienced academic to fill the position of Associate Professor/Professor, Discipline of Surgery at the Randwick Clinical Campus.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing academic leadership and fostering excellence in innovative teaching, research, and engagement within the discipline. They will work collaboratively across all SoCM clinical campuses and with the South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) to integrate teaching, research, and clinical care.

This is an opportunity to drive high-quality surgical education, lead original and impactful research, and contribute to curriculum design and delivery in alignment with UNSW's academic standards. The role involves mentoring staff and students, supervising Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates, and contributing to governance through active participation in committees and leadership groups.

  • Job Description:
  • We are seeking a senior academic leader with expertise in surgery to provide strategic guidance on teaching, research, and engagement initiatives.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement educational programs that promote excellence in surgical education.
  • They will also be responsible for leading research projects and teams, including supervising HDR candidates and attracting internal and external funding to support educational or research initiatives.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have:

  • A medical qualification registrable in New South Wales, specialist training in a surgical discipline, and a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent.
  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline area, as well as an outstanding research record, including significant external research funding and publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.
  • A record of leadership and achievement in a managerial role in a university or similar professional or clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated capacity to successfully lead and manage complex organisational change in clinical, research, and education settings, including high-level skills in leadership, analysis, liaison, negotiation, and conflict resolution involving multi-disciplinary teams.
