About the Opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is seeking an academic to lead the development of teaching and learning related to First Nations peoples' history, culture, and health in courses for the Doctor of Medicine program.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Teaching cultural awareness, respect, and responsiveness in interactions with First Nations peoples under a framework of cultural safety;
  • Teaching key aspects of history and culture connected to current health issues affecting First Nations peoples;
  • Developing strength-based approaches and communication as counterpoints to problem-based perspectives on First Nations health and peoples;
  • Teaching First Nations perspectives on health and healing and what can be learned from their approaches;
  • Fostering partnerships and engagement focused on mutually beneficial relationships that support community-led change and co-design.
Key Requirements:
  • Being a First Nations person;
  • Postgraduate and/or professional qualifications in a relevant field or Aboriginal Health Practitioner, Liaison Officer, or allied health profession;
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning with a focus on ensuring a high-quality student experience using First Nations knowledges, experiences, pedagogies, and perspectives;
  • Effective teaching skills including the ability to develop and lead scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning;
  • Experience in community engagement activities, particularly in First Nations health networks;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to relate to staff and students from all backgrounds and disciplines;
  • Able to contribute to the development of a culture of excellence and scholarship in health and medical education;
  • Understanding of principles of confidentiality, anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and safety, and other relevant legislation.
