Job Description

Role Overview:

We are seeking an accomplished leader to fill the role of Assistant Head - Student Learning & Support at the Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and leadership across specialist learning services, student wellbeing frameworks, and targeted programs for students with disabilities, EAL/D learners, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students.

This is a senior leadership position that requires vision, expertise, and a commitment to inclusive education.

Responsibilities
  • Provide system-wide leadership of specialist learning and support services, focusing on students with disability, EAL/D, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander funding.
  • Develop and implement Student Wellbeing framework initiatives, positive behaviour programs, and student counselling services and allied health professional services offered to our schools.
  • Lead the CSO Leadership team in creating a culture of belonging and acceptance for all students, ensuring they are known as individuals and learners, and demonstrating growth in their learning every year.
  • Maximise learning opportunities by understanding individual needs, characteristics, and their impact on learning.
  • Strategic leadership in managing, facilitating, developing, delivering, and evaluating services and specialist programs to support student engagement and opportunities.
  • Support students with disabilities, mental health, and complex needs, aligned with the Diocese's student outcome priorities.
  • Develop adaptive, innovative, and continuous improvement strategies for funded student support programs.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Data and Analytics to ensure accuracy in specialist support and wellbeing data that informs school progress.
Requirements
  • A clear understanding of contemporary issues in the Catholic Church and a personal commitment to Catholic education and its mission.
  • Demonstrated success in ensuring a culture of continuous improvement, creating effective specialist programs, and leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • High-level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to develop and sustain constructive relationships within and beyond the school community.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and sustaining collaborative teams to achieve quality student learning outcomes.
  • A passion for and interest in student development throughout their school journey.
  • Expertise in current curriculum and wellbeing, familiarity with state and national developments in specialist education.
  • Leadership in implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) frameworks, such as Response To Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L).
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the capacity to effectively use data to optimise student outcomes.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and legal frameworks, including child protection, work health and safety, equity and diversity, and performance management principles.
  • Ability to lead staff in implementing funded student support programs for quality outcomes in students with additional or complex needs.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with Principals, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead a team familiar with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pedagogical approaches and learning styles, guiding staff in adopting practices acknowledging cultural perspectives in teaching and learning.
Salary and Benefits

$120,000 - $150,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.

Benefits include car allowance, corporate fitness program, employee assistance program, training and staff development programs, paid parental leave, and long service leave after five years.
