About the Role

Life Without Barriers is committed to supporting children and young people with backgrounds of trauma, abuse, and neglect. We are seeking a highly skilled Therapeutic Residential Support Specialist to join our Newcastle-based team.

This rewarding role will provide daily care, supervision, and transport to children and young people in residential care within a therapeutic framework. You will implement, follow, and support each individual's care plan, planning and actively engaging children and young people in purposeful activities that increase and develop life skills.

As a key member of our multi-disciplinary team, you will work collaboratively to address the impacts of abuse, neglect, separation from families, and complex trauma on children and young people. Your empathetic understanding of complex trauma and its effects on children and young people in out-of-home care will be essential in providing high-quality support.

You will have a strong understanding of child development and the ability to support the learning of a broad range of life skills. A current First Aid Certificate and Australian Drivers Licence are also required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily care, supervision, and transport to children and young people in residential care within a therapeutic framework.
  • Implement, follow, and support each individual's care plan.
  • Plan and actively engage children and young people in purposeful activities that increase and develop life skills.
  • Support the routines of children and young people through assisting in and supervising wake-up, bedtime, daily care, both physical and personal, completion of chores and laundry, meals, meal preparation, recreational activities, homework supervision, and assistance.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to address the impacts of abuse, neglect, separation from families, and complex trauma on children and young people.
  • Support the involvement of family and facilitate contact and the development/maintenance of positive family relationships.
  • Monitor and maintain high-quality written and electronic documentation such as daily notes and report writing.
Skills & Experience:
  • Current First Aid Certificate.
  • Current Australian Drivers Licence.
  • Experience working with children and young people, ideally within an out-of-home care and/or childcare setting.
  • Demonstrated empathetic understanding of complex trauma and its effects on children and young people in out-of-home care.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development and the ability to support the learning of a broad range of life skills.
What We Offer:

We offer a competitive salary of $65,000 - $75,000 per annum, plus superannuation and other benefits.
