About Us
The Office of General Counsel is a legal advisory service based in Canberra. We specialise in providing expert advice on constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation, and the development, implementation, and administration of legislation.
We act for the Commonwealth in High Court constitutional litigation and coordinate the conduct of other cases involving constitutional issues. Our team of over 80 lawyers has specialist expertise in constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation, and the development, implementation, and administration of legislation.
In these roles, you will work as a trusted legal advisor for the Commonwealth. You will provide expert legal advice and assistance to clients in specialist areas including constitutional law, public law, and statutory interpretation.
You will also be responsible for building strong client relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree with a strong academic record
- Admission to practice law in Australia
- Experience in areas of relevance and knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment
- Excellent problem-solving, research, analytical, and writing skills
- A demonstrated ability to work under pressure and in urgent circumstances, either alone or as a member of a team, and to take responsibility for matters under supervision
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and persuasion skills
- Capacity to meet personal productivity targets
- The ability to contribute to or prepare cost estimates for matters and effectively manage matters in accordance with agreed client arrangements
