Job Opportunity

The Director TUMRA role is a high-profile position requiring deep understanding of the cultural connection of Traditional Owners with the Great Barrier Reef.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading strategic delivery of programs with Traditional Owners to achieve reef conservation outcomes
  • Influencing policy and operational outcomes for Country and culture through effective negotiation and representation
  • Representing the organization at high-level forums and negotiations, promoting reef conservation and cultural authority

Other key responsibilities include building relationships, managing competing priorities, and representing the organization sensitively in complex matters.

This role supports affirmative action under subsection 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

Successful candidates will have a deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's spiritual connection to Country, as well as sound knowledge of government policies and initiatives such as Closing the Gap and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess:

  • A deep understanding of cultural authority, traditional lore, and customs for managing Country, including effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Strategic leadership skills that motivate and inspire others through example, driving reef conservation outcomes
  • Proven experience in building high-level relationships that achieve enduring partnerships, particularly with First Nations people, promoting cultural authority and reef conservation
  • Strong attention to detail, resilience, and composure when managing competing priorities or complex challenges, ensuring effective outcome delivery

You will also need to be confident in representing the organization at internal and external forums and negotiating sensitively on complex matters, promoting reef conservation and cultural authority.
