City Services at Southampton City Council are seeking a highly skilled Safety and Compliance Manager to play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our dedicated staff.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and managing compliance with all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures. This is a hands-on role that requires visiting different teams at various depots, ensuring a positive safety culture and implementing robust safety measures across our environmental services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety protocols and procedures to keep staff safe.
  • Cultivate a positive safety culture, encouraging staff to prioritize safety and look out for one another.
  • Ensure all staff have access to and understand risk assessments and method statements to perform their duties safely.
  • Develop and execute a 5-year safety strategy in alignment with organizational, legislative goals, and objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of the safety strategy, monitoring progress and adjusting as necessary to achieve optimal results.
  • Minimize accidents and incidents by proactively identifying and addressing hazards and risks.
  • Encourage and facilitate the reporting of near misses and hazards to continually improve safety practices.
  • Manage 2 safety, health, and compliance officers.

About You

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proven experience in safety management, ideally within a municipal or environmental services setting.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and best practices in the relevant field of operation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a track record of successfully implementing safety initiatives and driving results.
  • Level 6 NEBOSH Diploma is essential.
  • Full UK driving license and right to work in the UK essential.
