About the Role

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is seeking a highly skilled professional to drive the company's positioning in policy, market design, and regulatory processes associated with distributed energy resources, consumer energy resources, traditional demand-side activation, and changes in the electricity retail market.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and drive alignment with AEMO's strategic reform position (short-, medium-, and long-term) associated with the integration and recognition of distributed energy resources, consumer energy resources, traditional demand-side activation, and changes required to the wholesale and retail markets to accommodate the energy transition associated with these emerging technologies.
  • Lead AEMO's positioning into all policy and regulatory processes associated with distributed energy resources, consumer energy resources, traditional demand-side activation, and changes in the retail markets.
  • Manage a highly competent team of market designers (engineers, economists, technical specialists) who are engaging across processes with Government, market bodies, and industry to develop proposals for reform and market design changes (including economic, policy, regulatory, operational and technology changes) and influencing those processes.
  • Engage with senior management and executives to seek guidance and gain alignment to AEMO's strategic priorities and how AEMO needs to position itself to achieve meeting the corresponding objectives.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders, including representing AEMO in external working groups, both formal and informal, and supporting the team to do the same.
  • Coordinate internally with other parts of Reform Delivery, Operations, System Design, Western Australia and Strategy, including chairing an internal manager panel of managers and group managers, and reporting to executive-level committees.
Requirements
  • Appropriate tertiary and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (for example, engineering, economics)
  • 7-10 years' experience in energy industry in commercial, market body, or governmental department. Academic experience will also contribute to experience but expect some level of industry/policy experience outside of academic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in driving or influencing change in energy market design, regulation or policy (or comparable, with clarity on how experience translates).
  • Sound appreciation of the technical and/or economic issues affecting the physical operation of the electricity system and changes being or expected to be experienced through the energy transition.
  • Practical working knowledge of the political, regulatory and environmental frameworks in which AEMO and the energy markets are operating, including a sound appreciation of the regulatory regime governing the National Electricity Market (including the National Electrical Law and National Electricity Rule) and associated change processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and leading a cross-discipline team to deliver an outcome in a complex environment with many competing demands, working collaboratively to manage various perspectives, actively seek input and determine pathways forward.
  • Proven ability to communicate and engage, both verbally and in writing, with confidence and credibility, with people at all levels, both internal and external. Includes ability to develop and edit material, lead and support presentations and discussions.
