Mentorship Opportunities in STEM Education:

We are seeking volunteer mentors to support young women in their pursuit of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

The Curious Minds program is an eight-month initiative that offers 120 girls from across Australia the opportunity to engage with various aspects of STEM through camps, guest lectures, interactive sessions, practicals, and field trips.

You will be matched with a female student based on compatible STEM interests and geographical location. You will receive training and support throughout the program.

The program includes two camps: an in-person, residential Summer Camp and a Winter Camp held online. You will attend the Summer Camp for one day in person to meet your student and initiate a bond. We also encourage you to attend a session for Winter Camp.

The mentoring program takes place between Summer and Winter camps, with regular contact between you and your student to help them build their skills and confidence in a STEM area. This can include discussing study options and career pathways, helping them undertake further extension work, developing ideas based on learnings from the camp, working on a STEM exploration, or inviting them to your workplace for a visit.

Modules will be provided to give you and your student ideas of useful things to do, and the overall objective is to increase your student's confidence, stimulate her curiosity, inspire her enthusiasm, and motivate her interest in STEM studies and careers.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend webinar training and catch-ups with program staff and other mentors.
  • Attend one day of Summer Camp to meet your student in person, initiating a bond and getting a head start with your mentoring.
  • Connect with your student every three weeks, with communications in between, assisting with their STEM exploration and story sharing, and providing guidance and insights into a STEM career.
  • Attend an online wrap-up session during the winter camp to celebrate the achievements of the group.

Qualifications:

  • A successful track record of engaging with STEM activities.
  • Desire and capability to work with young people, particularly high school students.
  • Understanding of and agreement to mentor responsibilities.
  • A valid Working with Children Check or equivalent registration.
  • Ability to commit to time requirements.
  • To be based in Australia during the program.
