Optimizing Almond Production Through Physiological Research
2 days ago
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to undertake a PhD project investigating the physiological response of almond varieties to orchard management practices.
This project aims to determine the contributing factors to leafing failure in almonds and develop strategies to mitigate this response. The successful candidate will work closely with growers to establish best management practices for individual almond varieties, promoting sustainable farming systems and contributing to a healthy river system and communities.
The project will involve plant physiological measurements, including carbohydrate levels as an indicator of plant function, to support the identification of contributing factors to leafing failure and advise on approaches to mitigate this response for various almond varieties, including Monterey.
Primary supervision will be provided by Dr Joanne Ashnest from Charles Sturt University, with co-supervision from Dr Bruno Holzapfel and Dr Cassandra Collins from Charles Sturt University and The University of Adelaide, respectively.
Candidates should have a strong background in agricultural science, environmental science, plant physiology, or horticulture, and possess excellent research skills and knowledge. Requisite qualifications and experience include a Master's or honours degree, or equivalent research or work experience.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to a healthy, resilient, and sustainable river system and communities through their research, while developing valuable skills and knowledge in plant physiology and sustainable agriculture.
- Foster collaboration between researchers, growers, and industry partners to advance almond research and promote sustainable farming practices.
- Contribute to the development of best management practices for individual almond varieties, enhancing the resilience and sustainability of almond production systems.
- Pursue a career in plant physiology, sustainable agriculture, or related fields, with opportunities for further education and training.
To apply for this PhD opportunity, please contact Dr Joanne Ashnest at Charles Sturt University.
