About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Team Leader to join our Compliance and Disclosure team at The Law Society of New South Wales. This is a newly created role, full-time permanent (35 hours per week) with a hybrid working model.

About the Team

The Professional Standards Division (PSD) of the Legal Regulation Department is responsible for investigating complaints about solicitors, disclosures made by solicitors, and other referrals or complaints about solicitors. The team prepares reports for the Council of the Law Society of NSW and its Disclosure and Professional Conduct Committee, as well as the Director, Legal Regulation. In addition to its investigatory role, the Department has a litigation section conducting matters in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The Department also provides services and assistance to members by provision of general advice, ethics advice, costs and regulatory assistance, and it has an educational role.

About the Responsibilities

  1. Leading a Team of Investigators
  • Supervise a small legal team charged with the investigation and resolution of disclosures made by solicitors and other suitability and compliance matters under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW).
  • Prepare reports for the consideration of the Disclosure Committee, the Professional Conduct Committee, and the Council of the Law Society of NSW.
Investigation and Resolution
  • Expedite the assessment, analysis, and investigation of referrals about and disclosures made by solicitors.
  • Draft relevant correspondence, notices, and reports.
Liaison and Communication
  • Liaise with solicitors, the Disclosure Committee, the Professional Conduct Committee, Council of the Law Society of NSW, Legal Services Commissioner, and their staff.
Active Involvement
  • Be actively involved in the Legal Regulation Department, including legislative and legal development.

About You

  • Hold legal qualifications with extensive relevant legal experience.
  • Be admitted as a lawyer.
  • Have supervisory and/or management experience.
  • Have a sound knowledge of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) and related legislation.
  • Have a good grasp of solicitor's accounting practice.
  • Be able to use clear, concise language in correspondence and reports.
  • Be able to plan and organise self and others to ensure the completion of tasks and to manage and support others to succeed in their roles.
  • Be able to structure, engage, and present information clearly.
  • Have demonstrated ability with regard to computer skills, including word processing capabilities, proficiency with e-mail and internet applications, and database applications.
  • Be able to use information, knowledge, and experience to analyse and form judgements.
  • Behave in an honest and trustworthy manner, treat others fairly, and be open about one's own misjudgements and any conflicts of interest which may be present.
  • Display a commitment to quality client service, value the supplying of accurate and timely information, and relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
