Job Opportunity

This is a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of organic and organometallic chemistry. The successful candidate will contribute to research as part of an ARC-funded Discovery Project, focusing on synthesising and characterising novel molecular wires.

About the Role

The Postdoctoral Fellow (Level A) will perform advanced chemical syntheses and use various analytical techniques to uncover the design principles that control electronic delocalization in molecular wires.

The role reports directly to Dr. Martin Peeks and involves no direct supervision responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in organometallic and organic chemistry, and molecular electronics.
  • Perform and supervise chemical syntheses, including air-free techniques such as glovebox and Schlenk line.
  • Characterise the products of synthesis and study their properties.
  • Write and maintain accurate laboratory notebooks.
  • Successfully complete experiments and provide timely analyses of results.
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers, reports, and research proposals; seek collaboration with industry partners as appropriate.
  • Assist with coordinating research activities and laboratory management, and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
  • Present results at national and international conferences.
  • Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
  • Supervise research students (Honours and PhD) in the research area where necessary.
About the Successful Applicant

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in inorganic or organic chemistry, with specific expertise in organometallic chemistry.
  • Experience in air-free synthesis, including the use of glove boxes and/or Schlenk lines.
  • Proficiency in NMR spectroscopy.
  • Desirable skills include knowledge of pi-conjugated molecules, density functional theory, spectroelectrochemistry, and vibrational spectroscopy.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high-quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Proven commitment to staying up-to-date with discipline knowledge and developments.
What We Offer

You will receive a competitive remuneration package, including a salary range of $113K - $121K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading. This is a fixed-term appointment for 2 years, working full-time (35 hours per week).
