Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal Manager to join our team at The State of Queensland. As a key member of our Crime and Intelligence Legal Services team, you will play a critical role in providing specialist legal advice and consultancy services to support the achievement of our strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Management
    • Provide leadership and manage the activities of the Crime and Intelligence Legal Services, Legal Division to ensure the fair allocation of workload, the provision of accurate advice, and the identification of opportunities for improving QPS policies and practices.
  • Legal Advice and Consultancy
    • Provide high-quality legal advice to senior management, including submissions on complex aspects of criminal law, evidence, policy, procedures, and other operational law enforcement initiatives affecting or likely to affect the Queensland Police Service in order to minimize legal risk to the Service.
    • Provide high-quality legal advice, recommendations, and assistance to investigators and officers of other disciplines in relation to the conduct of investigations into major and organized criminal activity.
  • Representation and Liaison
    • Represent the Legal Unit and/or the Service at court and tribunal hearings and in a variety of internal and external committees and forums where expert legal advice is required.
    • Liaise with internal QPS units as well as external bodies, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Crime and Corruption Commission, and other government and law enforcement agencies.
  • Research and Training
    • Conduct legal research into issues affecting law enforcement operations and assist State Crime Operations Command in the development and delivery of specialist training programs.
Requirements
  • Qualifications
    • Admission, or eligibility for immediate admission, as a barrister or solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and enrolment or eligibility for enrolment to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
  • Security Clearance
    • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance to the minimal level of Negative Vetting Level 1.
  • Education
    • Possession of a degree in law from a recognized tertiary institution, or equivalent qualifications.
Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will be required to undergo psychometric assessment prior to appointment. Applicants are advised that whilst performing the duties of the position, they may be exposed to material of a graphic and sensitive nature. The successful applicant will be required to perform duty in locations as directed by Legal Division.
