We are seeking a dedicated Community Midwife to join our team in providing quality health services to the Aboriginal people of far western New South Wales.

The successful candidate will report to the Manager Healthy Start and work full-time, coordinating and assisting in a wide variety of midwifery treatments and care activities using a patient-centered approach in a general practice clinic.

Key responsibilities include working as part of the Child and Family Program within the Maari Ma footprint, to provide safe and effective community midwifery services and ensure the continuity of care for mothers and children through pregnancy, infancy and ongoing into childhood.

The Community Midwife will also mentor and support Aboriginal Health Practitioners and trainees with ante natal and post-natal care, encouraging their active participation at all times.

Competently performing clinical midwifery duties identified as being required in the preparation, execution and monitoring of maternity care plans according to best available evidence is another key responsibility.

This includes antenatal and post-natal assessments, baby checks, immunisations and other injections, collection of pathology samples.

Implementing the AMIHS Program Activities working in collaboration with maternity, medical, obstetric and paediatric staff to provide a range of community-based services for Aboriginal women and their babies is essential.

These services include:

• A culturally appropriate continuity of care model through the antenatal and postnatal periods up to 6-8 weeks;

• Identification of complicated pregnancies and appropriate referral to specialists;

• Outreach and home visiting service;

Developing and maintaining a positive collaborative working relationship with the midwifery team, to facilitate best practice holistic, culturally appropriate care throughout pregnancy and postnatal period is critical.

Emotional and social support for women, especially those with high needs, is also a key aspect of the role.

Requirements
  • Current unconditional registration with AHPRA as an registered Midwife
  • Minimum 3 years midwifery experience, preferably in a community role
  • Currently possess or able to obtain within 3 months of commencing employment, authorisation as an immunisation provider in New South Wales
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of primary health care and how they relate to maternal and infant health in relation to Aboriginal children, women and families
  • Ability to work with Aboriginal staff and communities in a way that fosters mutual respect
  • Ability to work effectively in a community based setting with women, parents, carers, families and other service providers, and ability to respond effectively to clients who may be challenging to engage
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, liaise and network with a range of health services and GP's
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of social determinants of health issues affecting Aboriginal people
  • Ability to work effectively in a community-based setting and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
